Design note

Enter the chunky ribbed beanie in Vicuña

This is a rather simple and timeless piece but executed very differently.

What makes it so different? The material used and the people using it.

Knitted in Umbria, Italy, by a third-generation family of artisans using the finest, 100% pure Vicuña, there isn't much more to say about this piece rather than state the facts. Vicuña, the most sought-after, rare and valuable fiber in the world is worth more than its weight in gold.

Knitted in Umbria, Italy

Made in Italy carries an almost instant validation in the world of Cashmere - however, it's never quite simple with many facilities choosing to cut corners and engage in lower-quality production in order to compete with the 'democratized offerings of fast-fashion. Seeking somewhere with exceptional standards for the knitwear in our 'Quintessential' collection, we searched through many of the boutique facilities peppered across the country (mainly around Piedmont, Genoa, Bologna, and finally Umbria), until we found a place that was rather special. The founding craftsman of this workshop in Umbria took his first step into the world of textiles and knitwear at the age of seventeen, when he accepted an apprenticeship working for his aunt. A renowned artisan herself, she groomed him for over a decade until he had garnered the experience and contacts he felt necessary to open his own shop. Today, the small business that opened with just two pieces of machinery has expanded under the watchful eyes of his family, who continue to run the workshop. These artisans craft beautiful knitwear from some of the highest quality materials for luxury houses all over the world. Most important to them is the continuation of beautiful, authentic Italian craftsmanship.

Product Material

Vicuña is the rarest fibre in the world, with availability closely monitored by Peruvian authorities and the select few brands that offer it for sale.

The process of transforming fibres into fabric starts with a tradition dating back to the ancient Incas, according to which individual strands are sorted carefully by hand. These fibres then arrive at our mill where they are woven into impeccable pieces by craftsmen, who pride themselves on the care and attention they dedicate to everything they produce. Archibald London A $3,000 Men’s Scarf for $575? A New Kind of Bargain by S. Christian (03/05/2017), The Wall Street Journal.

craftsmanship excellence is represented in each of our Vicuña pieces. It's simple, really- the world's rarest fibres, woven by the world's premier craftsmen.

We refuse to compromise on quality, which is why we source only the finest Vicuña, made by the masters. Each Vicuña item in our range balances lightweight comfort with supreme warmth in a classic piece that is literally worth more than its weight in gold. While our customers appreciate us increasing the availability of this luxury material, our competitors are not so keen on the challenge to their excessive prices. We do like to cause a stir...

Archibald, (Un)dressed - our entire collection, up to 25% off

Archibald was founded on the principle of bringing people together to celebrate quality, craftsmanship, and human excellence. We want to allow as many people as possible to own and enjoy items made by the world’s most talented craftsmen using only the finest materials.

With this in mind, we never intended to offer discounts or operate sales of any sort because our pricing approach didn’t build in an ability to do so. Traditional retail operates on the false-discount model, where the price they expect you to purchase for is generally different from the sticker price of the item being sold. We opted against these games and prioritized value, offering fair and transparent pricing as a fundamental tenet of our brand.

Over the past few years, we faced significant challenges that tested our resilience. From a craftsman altering product specifications without notice during the pandemic to delayed pre-orders of sneakers in early 2023, these events brought us to the brink. However, each challenge has ultimately strengthened our commitment to excellence. With lessons learned, we’ve worked hard to ensure that today, our brand is stronger—in product, systems, and service. Yet, we know there is always room for growth, and we remain focused on continually improving the experience we offer you.

More importantly, these issues, though resolved, caused frustration among some of our customers. While many of the negative reviews don’t reflect the extensive efforts made to resolve each incident—often resulting in happy outcomes—those experiences still prompted some customers to voice their dissatisfaction. We understand that each represents a moment where we could have done better, and we take each one seriously.

If our products intend to stand alongside those from brands we look up to, like Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, and Loewe, then offering them through a more direct and inclusive pricing model should not compromise the level of service and experience that accompanies them. The artisans we work with have dedicated their lives to creating exceptional products, and anything less than an equally exceptional experience would do a disservice to their craft—and to you, our valued customers.

For the time being, as we continue to build back strong, Archibald is (Un)dressed and you can enjoy a generous 25% off our already disruptive and fair prices.
